Casa Rosa Art Courses

Forthcoming dates

Spring and Autumn

We organise art courses twice a year or more often if there is demand. These tend to be in March and then again in October but dates may vary. Contact Rosie for details. Artists take over at Casa Rosa!

Kate and Rosie, of Casa Rosa Art, are opening the studio again for three spring art courses at Casa Rosa, distinct artistic retreats. The first is tutored oil painting with Jutta Glöckner in February, followed in April by a week of artistic felt making with Sarah Waters and an oil painting week tutored by Sam Clayden. All three will offer a feel good ethos, regular healthy meals, plenty of exercise if wanted - pool, tennis, pingpong, walks - luxy bedrooms and a complete removal of all the day to day stresses of home. Add to this the companionship of artists and the stimulus of their lighthearted conversation, to focus the heart and mind on the artistic possibilities of your creativity.

Drawing and Painting with Jutta Glöckner

In February, an exciting opportunity to escape the confines of our usual studios, we offer this interesting painting and drawing course with a new teacher to Casa Rosa Art. Generally sunny and definitely far brighter than February in the UK, a course of painting and drawing in the sun of Andalucia is just the Vitamin D boost we all need.

Jutta Gloeckner, an experienced teacher, is planning a variety of challenges for her group of developing painters, from still life to landscape using the joyous array of pottery, fabrics, art and architecture that Casa Rosa and its environs offer. Set in a landscape of Mediterranean plants, streams, lake and mountains the variety is sure to stimulate creativity.

Should the weather catch us out, there are adequate facilities for sheltered painting with a spacious studio, a wrap around veranda and, if still not warm enough, there is the main salon of the house where there is a log fire and central heating. Lunch is usually held outside in the sun on the veranda.

In February, the evergreen olives, cypresses, citrus and carob trees will provide greenery and the countryside will be spectacularly scattered with the pink blossoms and the contrasting black trunks of the almond trees. The mountains will provide their usual scenic backdrop, with a colour palette that changes with the time of day from silver through pink to deep navy blue.

About Jutta

In her teaching, she familiarises herself with each student’s work and helps them develop and discover their individual style using their preferred media. Inspired by various artists, she will suggest a theme and the group will work independently coming together for guidance at the end of the day.

Sarah Waters - Painting with Fibres

Sarah Waters is an experienced, international artist and tutor, whose works with fibres are much sought after by private individuals and for collections.

Sarah is an artist with a passion for feltmaking that originates from her love of sheep.

Living in the New Forest, UK her work reflects her desire to connect with nature and the importance of sustainability. Sarah uses local fleeces where possible and is passionate about supporting the British Wool Industry.  Wool has been a very under valued resource over the past few years and Sarah wants to show the potential that it now has for the future, in our throw away society.

The work Sarah produces is not only functional but has colour, texture and tactile qualities. Using both traditional and innovative techniques she aims to show the diversity and qualities feltmaking can be taken to and pushes the boundaries with her work.

What to expect on the course

Sarah will be teaching you how to ‘paint’ with fibres using the ancient art of felt making. You will be taking old and traditional felt techniques into modern and current concepts of art.  During the week Sarah will guide you through a series of technical exercises that will inform your own creative outcomes, whether it is 2D felt art or more sculptural 3D work. You will focus on design and colour mixing of the fibres, cutting and layering techniques to produce samples and finished items. Sarah will also introduce you to nuno felting (incorporation of fabrics) to add an extra dimension to your designs.

You will work together as a group on set exercises but then apply the concepts learnt to your own individual style of learning and desired outcomes. Work at your own pace and with continual guidance from Sarah throughout the week.

£1,760, full board, single occupancy, en suite. The package includes tuition and full board, with room and ensuite. If you wish to have a room on your own there is £150 single supplement.

Plein Air Painting with Sam Clayden

Sam Clayden is a portrait and landscape artist and an experienced teacher currently running a selection of drawing and painting workshops out of his Wimbledon studio. He exhibits with the Royal Institute of Oil Painters Annual Exhibition at the Mall Galleries among others. From his studio he works on commissions and personal projects to exhibit at various galleries and exhibitions.

When painting landscapes, Sam is primarily interested in capturing moments of light and atmosphere through attention to colour harmony, tone and shape. Having painted hundreds of landscape sketches whenever he has a spare moment, Sam believes anyone can learn to paint convincing impressions of nature so long as they are prepared to fail a lot along their journey.

What to expect on the course

The Plein Air Landscape Painting workshop is designed for artists of all levels. The course will cover everything from composition, colour mixing and colour theory to drawing, brushwork and battling the potential impracticalities of working outside.

This intensive workshop will focus on capturing fleeting moments of light in the beautiful Andalucian landscape. Casa Rosa sits in a rural idyll surrounded by mountains, distant villages and olive groves. Students will paint multiple studies per day, of a variety of scenes and at a range of sizes. In addition there will be a few larger projects to work on over the course of two days. You can expect to be equipped with knowledge of the key principles of oil painting and experience of picture-making outside in constantly changing light conditions.

£1,760, full board, single occupancy, en suite. The package includes tuition and full board, with room and ensuite - price and dates still to be finalised. If you wish to have a room on your own there is £150 single supplement.
